Process and Impacts
1. Pedestrian Ramps - As required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, the city typically retrofits the curb ramps at each corner to make it easier for people in wheelchairs (and strollers and other wheeled devices) to use the sidewalks.
The contractor will:
- Remove existing curb ramps, portions of sidewalk, and possibly areas of landscaping in the right-of-way next to the sidewalk and ramp.
- Form, pour, and finish new ramps and sidewalk connections.
- Detour pedestrians to other routes during construction.
- Replant or seed disturbed areas to restore their previous condition.
2. Overlay - This work includes saw cutting and grinding out existing travel lanes (1-2”) and replacing the pavement with new asphalt. This work is known as “grind and inlay” and provides structural strength to the roadway.
- Intermittent lane closures with traffic changes – no full street closures.
3. Finish work - A few weeks after the overlay, crews will perform an inspection and replace any pavement markings.
