Tigard Police ShieldThe Tigard Police Department is committed to a community policing philosophy and works very closely with the public to provide a wide range of programs and information. We are dedicated police professionals who are committed to the community and sensitive to its needs, while holding ourselves accountable to the highest standards of excellence and achievement.

There are three divisions within the police department, including Operations, Support Services and Administration.

  • Operations is the uniformed police patrol and traffic branch.
  • Support Services consists of records, detectives in the Criminal Investigation Unit and Commercial Crimes Unit, property and evidence specialists, School Resource Officers and training.
  • Administrative positions include the Public Information Officer, Community Engagement Program Coordinator, Business Manager and Confidential Executive Assistant to the Chief.

Commercial Crimes Unit

The Tigard Police Department’s Commercial Crimes Unit (CCU) is the only one of its kind in Oregon, and perhaps on the entire West Coast. Nationally recognized for their expertise in investigating commercial business crimes, CCU detectives follow up on a range of crimes affecting the Tigard business community, including organized retail theft, embezzlement, burglary, robbery and other crimes. Uniquely funded through business license fees, the detectives meet regularly with business leaders and Tigard Chamber of Commerce members. They also participate in the Northwest Fraud Investigators Association, the Metro Area Fraud Investigator Association and helped establish the Oregon Retail Crime Association Network.

Community Service Officers

These non-sworn officers support the patrol division and traffic safety unit, allowing police officers to focus on active calls for service and following up on cases. Community Service Officers (CSO) help with traffic crashes and traffic control, roadway hazards, parking complaints and permits, abandoned vehicles, graffiti, report taking and a wide range of other assignments.

Criminal Investigation Unit

Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU) detectives investigate serious crimes against people and property, including homicide, sexual assault, child abuse, rape, robbery, assault and more. One CIU detective is assigned part-time to the FBI Child Exploitation Task Force, and several CIU members contribute to the Washington County Major Crimes Team, where experienced detectives respond to immediate investigative needs during major events across Washington County.

Patrol

The patrol division is the backbone of every police department. Patrol is responsible for the initial handling of all dispatched police calls. 24-hour service requires three daily shifts, each consisting of a supervisor and patrol officers. Our goal is to assign officers to a particular district within Tigard, to develop relationships with community members and better understand the unique needs of particular areas. Patrol officers conduct most initial investigations and provide the community with the highest quality of police services, including K-9 support.

Property and Evidence

The Property and Evidence Specialists are responsible for the management, storage and control of all criminal evidence, body camera footage and personal property held by the Tigard Police Department. P&E Specialists are responsible for maintaining the integrity of evidence, chain of custody and destruction of evidence in accordance with statutes of limitations and court orders.

Records Specialists

Records Specialists are usually the first people you'll speak with in our police lobby. They help people who call the department or come into the lobby with questions or who need services. They are also responsible for data entry, control, maintenance and retrieval of police reports.

School Resource Officers

Our School Resource Officers serve in schools within the Tigard-Tualatin School District, to build rapport and relationships with students and staff, respond to safety concerns, attend school functions, provide prevention education and investigate crimes including abuse, neglect and missing persons involving minors. Because of their connections, students are more likely to share problems they are experiencing at school or home and concerns they have about peers, which may include issues relating to safety, bullying, dating relationships and more.

Traffic Safety Unit

Motorcycle officers and a supervisor provide enforcement of traffic safety laws, including speeding, distracted driving and a range of other issues. They also review photo enforcement citations and may participate in special safety enforcements throughout the year, focused on issues including DUII, proper use of car seats and seat belts and more.
