Tigard Police Send Zero Tolerance Message Regarding Prostitution

On Thursday, May 16th, the Tigard Police Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU) conducted an operation to target and arrest prostitution customers (“johns”). As a result, five men were taken into custody based on patronizing a prostitute for services.

Each year the City of Tigard proclaims April as Arbor Month, this year Mayor Cook's proclamation of Arbor Month will take place on April 2, 2013. Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care.

Woman Thwarts Purse Snatch at Mall
(March 21, 2013)
A 65 year-old Portland woman reported an attempted robbery while shopping at the Washington Square Mall on March 14, 2013. The victim alleged at approximately 5:30 p.m. she had returned to her vehicle which was parked on the west side of the shopping complex.

The Tigard Police Department is partnering with Pride Recycling to offer a free “community shred” on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Tigard City Hall parking lot (13125 SW Hall Blvd., Tigard).

Pedestrian Struck By Vehicle in Tigard

At approximately 11:15 p.m., March 14, 2013, Tigard Police were notified of a pedestrian being struck by a motor vehicle at the intersection of Pacific Highway and 72nd Ave. in Tigard. The driver had stopped and cooperated with the investigation.

WES Train Strikes Man in Tigard
(March 14, 2013)
A 22 year-old man apparently laid down on the WES commuter line tracks resulting in his death. The incident occurred today at approximately 5:40 a.m. The northbound commuter train had left the Tigard Transit Center only moments before the accident.

Tigard Police Investigating Home Burglary
(March 12, 2013)
A Tigard homeowner called 9-1-1 to report a burglary. The incident on March 12th occurred in the 8500 block of SW Colony Creek Ct. in Tigard. The female victim reported to police that she entered her home at approximately 12:15 p.m. and was alerted to a noise in the rear of the dwelling.

On March 4, 2013, a woman reportedly was attacked and robbed of her purse while she walked through a parking lot at the Washington Square Mall in Tigard.

Revised Urban Forestry Code Goes into Effect March 1

A City of Tigard library employee and a Hillsboro doctor are formally being recognized for their lifesaving efforts when a 63 year-old Tigard man went into cardiac arrest while inside the Tigard Public Library last month.

Tigard Police Officer Provides Security During Presidential Inauguration

Tigard Police Officer Gabe Maldonado traveled to Washington D.C. last month to provide added safety and security within the Metro transit system during the inauguration. Officer Maldonado is currently assigned to Transit Police which provides police services along the entire Tri-Met system. Maldonado was selected along with a handful of other Portland area officers to help with the expected surge of ridership on Metro associated with the inauguration of President Obama.

Purse Snatcher Steals Victim's Car Too

While shopping at a Tigard Rite-Aid, an 89 year-old woman had her purse unknowingly taken from a shopping cart where it had been placed. The incident took place at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 8th at the store located at 16200 SW Pacific Highway. Moments after noticing the purse was gone, she alerted store employees and bystanders who quickly jumped into action.

Three Juveniles Arrested After Theft Spree
(January 23, 2013)
Over the past weekend, Tigard Police investigated a rash of vehicle break-ins occurring in the neighborhoods along Pacific Highway near Canterbury Lane and Gaarde Street. As of Saturday morning, January 19th, police had taken seven reports of vehicles unlawfully entered.

OLCC Compliance Checks in Tigard Yields Favorable Results

Results from two recent OLCC compliance checks conducted in Tigard appear to indicate that establishments selling or serving alcohol are continuing to maintain statewide better-than-average compliance.

Tigard Police Commercial Crimes Unit Puts the Brakes on Local Chop Shop

After a week-long investigation, members of the Tigard Police Commercial Crimes Unit closed down an active vehicle "chop shop" operating in Tigard. After a tip which led investigators to the Affordable Automotive business located 13080 SW Pacific Highway in Tigard, six vehicles reported stolen have been recovered.

Tigard Police Embarking On Distracted Driving Safety Campaign

The risks of driving while distracted are thoroughly documented. According to AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, using a cell phone while driving quadruples the risk of a crash. Driver inattention is a factor in more than one million traffic crashes in the U.S. each year, with consequences from serious injury to death.

Tigard Police Plan Extra DUII Enforcement
(December 19, 2012)
Beginning immediately, Tigard Police will have additional officers on the roadways to ensure everyone’s safety. In cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) grant funding to promote high visibility enforcement (HVE), Tigard officers will be patrolling the roadways in Tigard with the primary focus on arresting impaired drivers.

City Council Adopts Recommended Land Uses
(December 13, 2012)
The Tigard City Council approved a Comprehensive Plan Amendment (CPA2012-00002) for the River Terrace area at its December 11, 2012 meeting. The amendment adopts the recommended land uses from the West Bull Mt. Concept Plan into the Tigard Comprehensive Plan, as well as associated policies to provide guidance during the preparation and after adoption of the River Terrace Community Plan.

Drive-thru Coffee Bar in Tigard Robbed—Second Time in Two Weeks

For the second time in less than two weeks, the drive-thru Black Rock Coffee Bar reported a robbery. The business is located at 15290 SW Pacific Hwy. in Tigard. A 9-1-1 call to Tigard Police at approximately 7:35 p.m. on Nov. 7 advised that an adult white male with a bandana partially covering the facial area entered into the coffee kiosk by way of the drive-thru window.

Tigard Names New Community Development Director
(November 8, 2012)
Kenny Asher has been selected as Tigard's new community development director. Mr. Asher is currently the director of Community Development and Public Works for the City of Milwaulkie where he oversees several departments and serves as the project lead and chief strategist for multiple transportation and land use initiatives. He will start his new position on Jan. 1.

Tigard Police and OLCC Conduct Compliance Checks Throughout Tigard
(October 30, 2012)
Three out of 30 businesses visited in Tigard on October 25, 2012 failed to pass an OLCC check for alcohol sales to minors. The Tigard Police Department assisted the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) with this effort. A team of OLCC inspectors along with two Tigard Police Officers accompanying two nineteen year-old male volunteers visited the selected establishments.

Tigard Participates in The EV Project—Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Installed at City Facilities

On October 22, 2012, the city learned eight electric vehicle charging stations will be installed at city facilities in Tigard. The city has been pursuing funding to install electric vehicle charging stations for several years and offered to locate charging stations at its public facilities via The EV Project.

Robbery at Tigard Dutch Bros. Coffee Drive-Thru
(October 24, 2012)
A 9-1-1 call at approximately 7:45 on Tuesday, October 23 alerted Tigard Police of a robbery which occurred at the Dutch Bros. Coffee located at 11746 SW Pacific Highway in Tigard. The female caller alleged that a man carrying a large knife had approached the business and demanded money and personal items from the employee.

At 5:35 p.m. on Monday, October 22, a lone man entered the Chase Bank located 11354 SW Durham Rd. in Tigard and allegedly made a demand for money, but not before ordering all the customers and bank employees to lay face down on the floor.

Tigard Police Officers were sent to a home located in the 9600 block of SW 74th Ave. in Tigard on Wednesday, October 10th at approximately 1:25 p.m. Moments before, a caller advised a police dispatcher that gunshots were heard in the area.

Tigard Police give a whole new meaning to "protect and serve" at an upcoming Tip-A-Cop event. Officers will serve as celebrity waiters and donate all the “tips” collected to Oregon Special Olympics. On Saturday, October 13th, the annual fundraiser will take place at the Red Robin Restaurant located at 10100 SW Washington Square Rd. in Tigard. The event is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.

On Tuesday, August 14th, Tigard Police were notified by staff at a local hospital of a 4 year-old being treated for internal injuries. The boy was transported by emergency medical personnel from the Good Neighbor Center located at 11130 SW Greenburg Rd. in Tigard.

Tigard Police Set To Enforce Pedestrian Crosswalk Laws

On Monday, August 6, 2012 at approximately 3:30 p.m., Tigard Police responded to a 9-1-1 call advising of an assault. Police arrived within moments at the Astro Gas Station located at the intersection of Pacific Highway and Walnut St. in Tigard. An Astro employee called police for the victim, who is also an employee.

Tigard Workers Rescue City Employee

A Tigard maintenance worker nearly died last month after suffering a heart attack and teetered on the edge of an open manhole cover before being saved by the efforts of quick-thinking co-workers. John Sager, 54, had just finished cleaning a sewer line in the backyard of a home on Southwest Benchview Terrace at about 8:30 a.m., July 15, when he was felled by the coronary.

Public Rail Transit Systems Initiative Petition in Tigard — Valid Signatures Collected Falls Short

Washington County Elections Division staff concluded its verification of signatures submitted for the initiative petition titled "Prohibits Tigard resources for 'Public Rail Transit Systems' without Election." The petition did not meet the required number of valid signatures to forward the matter to the ballot.

Metro and Tigard Join Forces to Purchase Fields Property
(July 25, 2012)
On Tuesday July 24, the Tigard City Council gave the go-ahead to contribute $2 million toward the purchase of the Fields property. The city is teaming up with Metro to buy the 26-acre site in central Tigard with support from two voter-approved bond measures. If the purchase is finalized, the property will become a publicly-owned park and natural area.

Tigard Man Seriously Injured After Being Struck By Vehicle
(July 5, 2012)
A 60 year-old Tigard man was seriously injured Monday night, July 2nd, after being struck by a vehicle. The incident occurred as the man was crossing Pacific Highway near McKenzie St. in Tigard. The accident was reported to Tigard Police at 9:45 p.m. The motorist, 63 year-old Mark Murphy, also of Tigard, immediately stopped after allegedly striking the pedestrian.

Call for Election for Tigard Mayor

Mayor Dirksen's current term of office expires December 31, 2014. He ran unopposed in the May 15 Primary Election for Metro Council, District 3. On June 22, 2012, he wrote to the Tigard City Council and Staff: I have today received official notification of Metro's acceptance of the election results from last month's primary election. Insofar as their resolution no. 12-4353 formally recognizes me as the winner in District 3, I therefore make notice of my resignation of the office of Mayor of the City of Tigard, effective December 31, 2012.

Tigard's New Burnham Street Wins National Project of the Year Award

The City of Tigard has earned a top national engineering honor for excellence in project management for the New Burnham Street project. Each year, the American Public Works Association (APWA) honors transportation projects from around the United States. Tigard won the 2012 APWA Project of the Year Award for a transportation project in the $5 to $25 million cost division.

Washington County Law Enforcement Memorial Service

This year, National Police Week is May 13th through the 19th. During that week, one day is identified as Peace Officers Memorial Day. Stabbing in Tigard Sends Two To Hospital

A man called 9-1-1 at 11:12 a.m. on Tuesday to allege being stabbed along with another man. The victim advised police that the incident occurred near a bus shelter at the corner of Pacific Highway and Walnut Place in Tigard.

Teen Alleges Being Robbed While Walking In Tigard
(May 11, 2012)
A 17 year-old boy called 9-1-1 at approximately 6:25 p.m. Friday evening to report being robbed. While walking along the 8600 block of SW Pine St. in Tigard, the victim alleged that he was approached by a white man in his early 20s. The suspect asked the victim for a cigarette which the victim responded he had none.

Tigard Police Investigating Retail Organized Theft from Nordstrom

The Commercial Crimes Unit within the Tigard Police Department is currently investigating an Organized Retail Theft which occurred at the Nordstrom’s store at Washington Square Mall in Tigard. Tigard Police were called to the store just after noon on April 17, 2012 on reports of two men stealing armloads of merchandise.

Due to some observant and responsible Tigard residents, two juveniles allegedly responsible for a string of graffiti were caught and arrested. A Tigard resident called Tigard Police on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at approximately 1:50 p.m. to report graffiti observed near their home.

Tigard Library Collects Record Number of Surveys

The library's annual patron survey yielded 3,818 responses in February—the most ever. Over 96 percent of the respondents rated the library's customer service at the reference, checkout and children's room desks as "Excellent" or "Good."

Two Arrested in Connection With Nordstrom Robbery in Tigard

A robbery occurred Tuesday afternoon at approximately 3:20 p.m. inside the Nordstrom Store located at Washington Square Mall in Tigard. The suspect allegedly walked into the customer service area and presented a demand note to an employee.

Urban Forestry Code Revisions Public Hearing — Continued

On February 6, 2012, the Tigard Planning Commission met and received public testimony on updates to the city's urban forestry related codes and standards. For the purposes of a discussion of project details, the hearing was continued to March 5, 2012. Public testimony will not be taken at the March meeting; however, the public is invited to attend and hear city staff brief the commission about details of the code.

Suspect Arrested in ATM Robbery

At about 3:15 PM Sunday, January 29th, 2012, Tigard Police responded to a call of a Robbery at the ATM of Chase Bank, located at 11354 SW Durham Rd., Tigard, OR. Officers determined a middle aged woman had been approached by a male carrying a knife, who demanded she give him an undisclosed amount of money she had just withdrawn from the ATM.

Burglary Suspects Lead Tigard Police In Chase—Ends With Two in Custody
(December 5, 2011)
A Tigard man called 9-1-1 at approximately 8:50 a.m. on December 5th alleging he interrupted a burglary at his home located along Hawks Beard St. and was held at gunpoint by a man and woman. A Tigard Police Officer who happened to be in the area on patrol spotted the two suspects in a red, older model Nissan Maxima parked near the Summer Creek Apartments.

Hit and Run in Tigard - Pedestrian Struck While In Crosswalk

Tigard Police arrested a 55 year-old Portland man after the vehicle he was driving struck a man while in a crosswalk. The incident occurred December 2, 2011 at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Pacific Highway and 72nd Ave. in Tigard.

Results of 2011 Community Attitudes Survey

Every two years Tigard residents are surveyed to ascertain their use of and satisfaction with City services as well as to determine priorities for their neighborhoods and the City. Topical questions added to this year's survey ask residents their opinion on recreation, social media, economic development, and high capacity transit.

Recent OLCC Compliance Checks Conducted in Tigard

Five out of 30 businesses visited in Tigard on November 4, 2011 failed to pass an OLCC check for alcohol sales to minors. The Tigard Police Department assisted the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) with this effort. A team of OLCC inspectors along with two Tigard Police Officers accompanying an eighteen year-old male volunteer, visited the selected establishments.

City of Tigard Narrows Search for City Manager

The Tigard City Council narrowed its search for a new city manager to two candidates. Beginning in May 2011, a nationwide search was conducted for a Tigard city manager by Alliance Resource Consulting LLC. A total of 87 resumes were presented to the Mayor and Council in mid-August.

Tigard Police Unit Crashes While Responding to an Emergency

On Saturday, September 3, 2011 at approximately 8:15 p.m., Tigard police units were responding to an emergency call for assistance at a rental property near the western boundary of Tigard. One of the responding police units enroute to the call was involved in a traffic crash at the intersection of S.W. Walnut Street and S.W. Watkins Street in Tigard.

Property Owners Request to Annex 200 Acres into the City of Tigard

Over 80 percent of property owners in a 200-acre area south of SW Scholls Ferry Road and west of Bull Mountain have requested annexation into the City of Tigard. This area is now referred to as River Terrace because of its geographic proximity to the Tualatin River.

On April 27, 2011 at approximately 8:55 a.m. an employee of Rite-Aid telephoned 9-1-1 to report a robbery. The witness told police a man allegedly had displayed a gun while demanding Oxycodone.

The Tigard City Council named Jane Davies as its 2011 Exemplary Citizen at the business meeting on April 19, 2011. Potso Dog Park Purchase Finalized

The City of Tigard has completed the purchase of the Potso Dog Park property. The park, located on Wall Street just off Hunziker Street in Tigard, was originally developed on property leased by the city from Coe Manufacturing in 2002. Since that time, the property has had several different owners, all of whom have continued to honor the city's lease.

Key Bank Robbed-Suspect In Custody

An employee of Key Bank located at 11665 SW Pacific Highway in Tigard called 9-1-1 at 9:11 am on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 to report a robbery. Information relayed during the call indicated that a white male adult had presented a note to a bank employee demanding money.

Man Robbed In Tigard Shopping Center Parking Lot

A 22-year-old Tualatin man called 9-1-1 and reported he was robbed by gunpoint. The victim told police the incident occurred just after he exited his parked vehicle. The robbery reportedly happened in the parking lot of a Tigard shopping center located at 13500 SW Pacific Highway just after 8:00 pm on Sunday evening, March 27th.

Tigard Police Detectives are currently investigating a reported stabbing which occurred shortly after noon Tuesday, March 22, 2011 just outside a restaurant in Tigard. A call made to 9-1-1 reported an altercation between three men who were standing near the intersection of Center St. and 88th Ave.

An employee of a Plaid Pantry convenience store located 11705 SW Pacific Highway contacted police at approximately 6:30 am on Sunday, March 6, 2011 to report a robbery. The victim stated that a white male entered the store just before 6:30 am and made a demand for money.

Tigard Improves Bond Rating

The City of Tigard announced that their bond rating has improved. A city's bond rating is similar to an individual's credit score. The impact of this improved rating will be a lower interest rate on the $17 million parks bond that was recently approved by Tigard voters on November 2, 2010.

Tigard High Capacity Transit Land Use Study Gets Underway

On December 13, 2010 the City of Tigard received notice to proceed from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) on the Tigard High Capacity Transit (HCT) Land Use Plan. This plan is a joint effort between ODOT, Metro, and the City of Tigard to plan for future station area communities in Tigard.
